Conflict resolution, and an update on a future project.

Conflict resolution is an ugly situation that nobody enjoys being in. When evaluating myself on how well I resolve conflicts, I would say that I am not all that great at it because I generally avoid conflicts altogether. No matter how much you read about it in articles and books, nothing can really prepare you for the "heat of the moment" when you have to resolve an issue in a timely manner.

I have found that more often than not, I will exacerbate the situation if I try to resolve a conflict by not communicating with each party properly, which usually comes from being too "direct" with people. Thankfully in my time as a Bearcast Sports Director, I have never faced a situation that required conflict resolution, and hopefully it remains that way over the course of these final 58 days of school.

Moving on to a brighter topic, I have finally narrowed down what I will do for my project to improve Bearcast. This basically enhances an idea that was already on the table with the directors, and I am the one who will finally move this forward. Since we have revamped our website, we need more written content to be featured on there to keep people coming back. Unlike years past, the Bearcast website has become a destination, not just a portal to where you can connect with the stream. My task will be to assemble a writing team to get the website off the ground and really moving as a fully functional destination where students can listen to music and read thoughtful commentary at the same time. This idea originated not only from the group of directors, but from Mark Ramsey's book "Radio on the Verge," which featured several interviews with business people who stressed the concept of differentiating yourself from the rest of the pack.

This project is in its early stages, and I have sent an e-mail through the journalism "list serv" to try to attract new writers who are interested. This is really just a "wait and see" approach right now, but more will come soon.
